Frequently Asked Questions
Where are Wenita forests located?
Wenita manages a forest area of approximately 30,000 hectares. We have three main forests in Otago: Mt Allan, Berwick, and Otago Coast. Our main office is located in Mosgiel at 11 Hartstonge Avenue.
Do I need to register to access Wenita forests?
Our forests are fantastic locations for recreational pursuits, and we are happy to share them with our community. To enter our forests, you need to obtain a permit via our online Forest Access System or, for some uses, by contacting us directly. Visit our Forest Visitors page on our website for more information.
What tree species does Wenita grow?
Radiata Pine is the major species grown in our forests, plus there are significant areas of Douglas fir. We also have approximately 3,000 hectares of protected environmental areas.
How do I find out about logging operations in my area?
Neighbours of the Wenita forests will be notified in advance of any logging operations planned in their area. For any other enquiries on logging operations, please contact the Wenita office on 03 489 3234 or email forestry@dn.wenita.co.nz.
Where do the trees go after they are harvested?
Approximately 60% of the wood from the Wenita forests is exported to India, Korea and China. The remaining 40% of the wood is delivered to domestic wood processors in Otago and Southland for further processing and we are working on ways to increase domestic processing.
How does Wenita manage pests and pathogens in the forest?
Wenita uses the best management practices to minimise and/or mitigate the environmental, social and/or economic risks associated with our forest operations.
What impact does forestry have on the environment?
Wenita aims to minimise any adverse effects on the environment from work in the forests and also aims to protect the many species which co-exist with our operations. Wenita has had Forestry Stewardship Council® (FSC) Certification since 2001. FSC certification is internationally recognised as the most rigorous environmental and social standard for responsible forest management. Wenita has developed environmental policies to guide our work. Plantation forestry is understood to have similar effects on soils, water quality and yield as native forests. For more information on the environmental policies and practices, visit the Environment page.
What are Wenita’s health and safety practices?
People are at the heart of what we do; we want them to enjoy their work and get home safely at the end of their workday. We have a range of health and safety tools to help make this happen. Visit the Health and Safety page for more information and click here for our health and safety policy.
What’s the ownership structure of Wenita?
Wenita is 100% owned by Taieri Forests Limited, which is owned by three shareholders: New Forests (ANZFF2), Stichting Pensioenfonds ABP (APG) and Pension Protection Fund (PPF) Investment Holdings 1 Limited.
How many people do you employ?
We employ 14 permanent staff and more than 150 contractors in a range of roles.
Are there any current job opportunities at Wenita?
Wenita has exciting opportunities for the right people to use their education and experience to contribute to our success. Any vacancies will be listed on our Careers page.
Do you support community initiatives?
We’re proud to be part of our local community. It’s important to us to support local educational initiatives, conservation efforts and community groups in Otago. To learn more about the initiatives we support, visit the Forest Neighbours Page.
