ENVIRONMENT

We value the environment we are lucky enough to work in. That is why we work so hard to protect it while we produce sustainable and renewable products.

FSC® Certification

We aim to minimise any adverse effects on the environment from our work and protect the many species which co-exist with our operations. Wenita has had Forestry Stewardship Council® (FSC) Certification since 2001. FSC certification is internationally recognised as the most rigorous environmental and social standard for responsible forest management. This certification – audited annually – shows we have strict policies and procedures in place to protect wildlife habitat and species and to preserve high-conservation-value forests. We have developed environmental policies to guide our work.

Wetland and Native Bush

About 1400 hectares of wetlands and native bush on Wenita’s estate are protected and each year our forests are independently assessed for pests and pathogens.

Sustainable Radiata Pine

Sustainable plantation forests are a key part of the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme (NZETS); fast-growing, commercial tree species like radiata pine remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Radiata Pine is also relatively free of pests and diseases and is well suited to New Zealand conditions.

Stream-health Monitoring

Stream monitoring has been undertaken in our forests since 2001. Further research aims to understand more about the impact and recovery cycles of rivers where intensive operations are being carried out. This will guide our future operations’ management.

High Conservation Value (HCV) Areas

There are currently four identified HCV areas within Wenita forests. These areas are protected because they can contain significant concentrations of biodiversity or threatened or endangered ecosystems. These sites all have Protected Area Management Plans (PAMPs) to keep them safe.
